With
the exception of flight engineer, most engineers work in ground maintenance looking after
servicing and overhaul of
aircraft, their engines and other related equipment. Most are
mechanical engineers, concerned with airframes and engines. A
smaller number specialize in aeronautics concerned with designing,
constructing, analysing, testing and operating of aircraft.
They work on electronic and electrical instruments, automatic control
guidance etc. This course does not prepare the
candidate to be a maintenance engineer.
They train first in Maintenance Engineering and gain several years'
experience before taking the special exams necessary to
gain a flight engineer's license issued by the Directorate of Civil
Aviation, Govt. of India. They work on flight decks of long haul
aircraft and are responsible to the captain for the correct function of all
the systems and equipment. They make flight
diagnosis and carry out repairs. They also work with ground engineers
over servicing and pre-flight inspections.
Your Work Environment
Ground engineers work on airports,
runways, servicing aircraft before take off. They also work in workshop shelters and
hangers, carrying out repairs. Some work in confined spaces also. Flight
engineers work mainly in confined spaces of the
flight deck.
Staff in the Aerodrome Wing,
Communication Operation Wing, Communication Technical Wing work seated, wearing
headphones, either in control towers with a view of the airport or in
darkened rooms. Air Traffic Controllers sit in darkened
rooms when using radar, identifying aircraft form spots of light on their
screens, and never actually see the aircraft they are
guiding.
The NAA staff also have to deal with
a lot of equipment such as computers, radio aids and navigational aids.
