Media and Films

What is it Multimedia ?
Have you seen “Jaadu” display his jaadu in the hit film Koi Mil Gaya ? Or the strange characters in Lord of the Rings and Alice in Wonderland ? Or the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park ? Films such as these have made use of vivid imagery to have the desired impact on the audience.

Multimedia is an integration of Information Technology, Design, Visuals and Communication. It is a tool which gives various communications media their cutting edge making possible the creation of graphics, animations, text, sound and other special effects. Thus the content we see, in the forms of films, commercials, radio and television programmes, DVDs, and videos, becomes much more colourful and effective.

You should have a flair for expressing your ideas through sound, colour and animation. Multimedia can offer an exciting and rewarding career and its related industries have grown exponentially. Market estimates suggest that though the Indian export market of animation in the past two years was worth $ 5 million, it could touch $ 50 million this year itself. Its application across business, education, entertainment, information, etc. make daily routines and work processes much more lively and welcoming than before.

Media Management

What is Media Management ?

If there is a story to tell, a fact to correct, a message to communicate, an image to project or protect, or an event to cover then media managers have the knowledge, capability and experience to achieve this with style. The media, in all its forms, is the method by which events reach mass audiences and sponsors communicate their messages. It is, therefore, one of the most critical components of marketing. The media industries are dominated by a number of large conglomerates whose interests and activities cut across many individual market segments such as publishing, audiovisual (TV and radio), film, sound recordings, and the Internet.

Modern media management is about applying the same skills, disciplines and practices, which are accepted as ‘best practice’ in industry and commerce, to the business of communications with and through the media. The activities range from the basics of establishing and running a press office for an event or sponsor, to the complexities of international media rights and the design and delivery of facilities and operations for a global circumnavigation event (travel all...

What is Copywriting ?

“Connecting people”,  “Get out there”, “We love to see you smile”, ” Discover what’s possible”, ” The power of choice” …. Whenever you hear a 30 second spot on the radio or read the words in a magazine print ad, a copywriter is responsible. The list is endless. Wherever there is something being sold, there is a copywriter somewhere writing the sales and advertising materials.

A copywriter creates the text for advertisements, promotional brochures or other public relations outlets. Advertising agencies routinely refer to a written script as copy, thus the name copywriter applies to those who create the scripts.

Copywriting is the use of words to promote a person, business, opinion or idea. Although the word copy may be applied to any content intended for printing (as in the body of a newspaper article or book), the term copywriter is generally limited to promotional situations, such as advertisements for print, television, radio or other media. The author of newspaper or magazine copy, for example, is generally called a reporter or...

Film Appreciation/ Critic

What is a Film Critic ?

Do reviews help you decide which movies to watch, and which to avoid? Has a critic ever influenced you in favour of, or against, a film, and/or its maker? Has a critic ever enhanced your understanding/appreciation of a particular film?

This year’s Cinderella story, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, a rag to riches film based on the life of a young slumdweller of Mumbai, has won the best cinematography award from the National Society of Film Critics, US.

In a comparison with another film, ‘Krishh’, with Hrithik Roshan as a superhero, was also success because he fit the character and the story was interesting.’ Abhishek gave good performances in Mani Ratnam‘s ‘Yuva’ and ‘Guru’ and all he needed was a good director and story to bring out the best in him, said a film critic. ‘The only bright spot in the movie is Priyanka in her beautiful costumes. She may not look all that convincing with a sword but at least she is gorgeous even when filmed in the Rajasthan desert...

Film Editing

What is Film Editing ?

Imagine you are seated in a movie theater. The lights are dim and credits appear over an opening shot of a seacoast town. The title appears on the screen and after the last credits evaporate, you see a long shot of a vacant summer cottage, then a medium shot of a mysterious-looking man pouring lighter fluid on the grass near the house and striking a match. The grass catches fire; the man flees. The vivid crackling of the fire dissolves into the sound of a young girl’s laughter as she packs clothing into a cardboard box and sings along with her CD player.

Who created this scene? The screenwriter, director, cinematographer, actors, lighting designer, sound designer, and, finally, the film editor. After hours and hours of reviewing the unedited film, the film editor created this one-minute scene. The scene appears to take place in a seacoast town during an autumn afternoon. In truth, little of what the audience sees on screen actually occurred, and it certainly was not all filmed in one afternoon.

Film Making

What is Film making?

Imagine a young child, eye level with a floor full of miniature toys, concentrating intently on building a make-believe world. To the child, the toys are not miniature figures made of plastic or wood. They are real characters with real adventures. The child frames the action, crafting scenes that unfold in a world of imagination.

Looking through the lens of a camera as actors bring to life a writer’s story, the filmmaker is also peering into a world of imagination. The director, producer, actors, screenwriter, and film editor are all essential players in the journey from concept to finished film. In this remarkable process, thousands of small details—and often hundreds of people—come together to create a film.  There are different ways of expressing yourself with moving images, using metaphor and lyrics which are integral to understanding the visual arts. The purpose of making movies is to reach an audience; to make them laugh, make them cry or make them jump so high they throw their popcorn over the two rows behind them. Films start with...

Mass Communication through the electronic media includes programmes in radio and television broadcasting, as well as making documentaries, commercials and feature films.

What is Modelling ?

Fashion Modelling centres around clothing design and manufacture, which can be broadly classified into three main sections namely, haute couture, wholesale couture and wholesale manufacturing. Haute couture fashion produces collections of exclusively designed “model garments”. Wholesale couture garments are sold in limited numbers through selected retail outlets. Some modeling takes place in this area. Wholesale manufacture of mass produced goods is by far the largest sector, following fashion trends in the haute couture section. Not much modeling is done in this area.

Only one or two copies of each garment are made almost entirely by hand. Regular shows are held which are attended by  media persons, wealthy customers and buyers  from exclusive shops. Most haute couture houses are owned and run by well-known designers. Top models like Madhu Sapre, Antra Mali, Aditi Govitrikar, Vikram Saluja, Milind Soman, are selected to model these garments.

What is Photography ?

“For the camera, the creative moment is brief–a compelling, ephemeral collision of event and artist…”. Ken Ruth. At the heart of all photography is an urge to express our deepest personal feelings – to reveal our inner, hidden selves, to unlock the artist. Since the beginning of time, humans have always wanted to duplicate the physical world – whether it was in the form of drawings, portraits, sculptures or even writing about it so as to bring it to life, but none of these mediums have been as accurate as photography. The emergence of photography over 150 years back has given rise to a new way of seeing and understanding the world. Photography is an art that allows us to freeze time, capture memories forever, enhance beauty and spread information.

With the enormous expansion of the communication network and media, photography has grown from being just a hobby to a full-fledged profession of great commercial value and feasibility. Anything from newspapers, educational books and journals, magazines, research and even the Internet would be highly uninteresting without the bright, informative, eye-catching...

Script Writing

What is Script writing ?

The Adventures of TinTin, Harry Potter series, Mission Impossible 4, Udaan, Rockstar, 3 Idiots, Lagaan, Gone with the Wind,  have all gone on to become great hits. Do you know the secret of their success ? Each of these films was backed by a wonderful script.  A script is a document that outlines every aural, visual, behavioral, and lingual element required to tell a story. Outlines are required because a film is a highly collaborative medium and the director, cast, editor, and production crew will, based on your “outline”, interpret your story their way when it is filmed. Because so many people are involved in the making of a film, a script must conform to standards that all involved parties understand and thus has a specific format or layout.

It is crucial to remember that film is a VISUAL medium. Script writers don’t just tell their audience their story, they SHOW them. They write a screenplay VISUALLY. Script writers virtually show it to them because they write what the audience will see and hear. This...

What is Brand Management ?

Nestle, Pepsi, Coke, Reliance, Tata Steel, Compaq, Olympus, Maruti are some of the brands we are all familiar with. Brand management is the application of marketing techniques to a specific product, product line, or brand. It seeks to increase the product’s perceived value to the customer and thereby increase brand franchise and brand equity. Marketers see a brand as an implied promise that the level of quality people have come to expect from a brand will continue with present and future purchases of the same product. This may increase sales by making a comparison with competing products more favorable. It may also enable the manufacturer to charge more for the product. The value of the brand is determined by the amount of profit it generates for the manufacturer. This results from a combination of increased sales and increased price.
