Organic Chemistry

Organic chemists are employed in all those industries that depend on R&D, working on projects from fundamental discovery to highly applied product development. Organic chemists have produced a wonderful myriad of highly successful products to fight human diseases.

Organic chemists at all levels are employed by pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical, consumer product, petroleum, and other industries from small to very large. Research and development is the primary opportunity in industry. Research universities that grant Ph.D.s have excellent teaching and research opportunities for Ph.D. chemists, many of whom will have post-doctoral training. Government labs also employ organic chemists.

Most companies develop products that solve consumer or customer problems and many of the solutions are based on organic molecules. Since new sets of problems and opportunities constantly arise, organic chemists are in demand to synthesize and produce the molecules that solve those problems. Consequently, the job market for organic chemists is usually strong, again reflecting that organic compounds and chemists are a critical factor in so many varied industries.

What is Industrial Chemistry ?

Industrial chemistry is the phrase used frequently to describe the area of commerce that focuses primarily on the manufacture of chemicals or the use of chemicals to manufacture “chemical products.” Comb your hair with plastic combs and brushes synthesized from chemical feedstocks, use a synthetic nylon toothbrush and toothpaste formulated by chemists to whiten teeth and protect against decay… Industrial Chemistry is a vibrant, ever-changing area. Billions of dollars go yearly into developing new materials, new processes, and better methods.

This is most evident in the production of ammonia, sulfuric acid, or sodium hydroxide, or in the use of petroleum feedstocks to produce organic materials such as ethylene, styrene, benzene, or caprolactam. In turn, these organics may be converted to the plastics, synthetic rubbers, or fibers that are commonplace in our everyday use.

Thus Industrial Chemists basically apply the principles that govern physical and chemical operations in industrial plants and products.

What is Cheminformatics ?

Chemoinformatics is a recent scientific discipline that has evolved in the last 40 years as the interface between chemistry and computer science. It has been realized that in many areas of chemistry, the huge amount of data and information produced by chemical research can only be processed and analyzed by computer methods. Furthermore, many of the problems faced in chemistry are so complex that novel approaches utilising solutions that are based on informatics methods are needed. This has resulted in the emergence of the discipline of Chemoinformatics, which involves the creation, retrieval, organisation, dissemination and processing of chemical information.

Thus, methods were developed for building databases on chemical compounds and reactions, for the prediction of physical, chemical and biological properties of compounds and materials, for drug design, for structure elucidation, for the prediction of chemical reactions and for the design of organic syntheses.

What is Chemical Biology ?

The most exciting and vibrant areas of research often lie at the interfaces between disciplines that have traditionally been separate. Chemical biology is a scientific discipline at the interface of the life sciences and the physical sciences. It involves the application of chemical techniques and tools, often compounds produced through synthetic Chemistry, to the study and manipulation of biological systems.
