Sports Medicine

What is Sports Medicine ?

Imagine a cricket match in full steam. Sachin catches the ball and falls headlong hurting his back. A stretcher comes on field with a doctor in tow. This is where sports medicine comes in.

Sports medicine is a multi-disciplinary field which includes the physiological, biomechanical, psychological, and pathological aspects associated with exercise and sports. Sports medicine refers to many different areas of physical exercise and sports science that relate both to performance and care of injury. Within sports medicine are areas of specialization such as clinical medicine, orthopaedics, exercise physiology, biomechanics, physical therapy, athletic training, sports nutrition, sports psychology, and more.

Many professionals, in fact, use the term “sports medicine”, when in reality they are either team physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, exercise physiologists, bio-mechanists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, or others. Therefore, studying sports medicine means the study of one of these fields which combine medical principals and sciences with sport and physical performance, for maintaining a physically fit lifestyle.

What is Adventure Sports ?

Float over the mountains … soar higher on every current of air … hang-glide in the mountains and valleys of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu, the Chamundi hills of Karnataka and the hills in Shillong in Meghalaya. What is so fascinating and so compelling almost to the point of addiction in adventure sports? It is the exhilarating thrill of dashing down the ski slopes or the landscape trekking or pedalling along sheer mountain slopes, white water rafting along the dangerous, roaring waters of great rivers, hang gliding over enormously deep mountain gorges and climbing serrated glaciers or mountain summits. Adventure activities like these are known as parasailing, trekking, rock climbing, boating and hovercraft riding.

What do I have to do ?

About 50,000 cubic feet of hot air fills a giant nylon balloon to which your basket is attached. Hot air ballooning is becoming a great adventure option in India. A hang glider is a flexible wing aircraft that is piloted by shifting one’s weight. The flight is dependent on the existence of rising columns of warm air called thermals. Take off involves...

What is Fitness Training ?

Get ready for not only a new body but a new life! Whether it’s losing weight, toning up, building muscles, increasing stamina, or preparing for a race, workouts and fitness training will help you reach your goals through personalized training. Personal trainers work with a client’s physician and/or therapist to construct a programme centred around restructuring lifestyle while helping to provide the necessary motivation for its success.

General fitness training works towards broad goals of overall health and well-being, rather than narrow goals of sport competition, larger muscles or concerns over appearance ! A regular moderate workout regimen and healthy diet can improve general appearance markers of good health such as muscle tone, healthy skin, hair and nails, while preventing age or lifestyle-related reductions in health and the series of heart and organ failures that accompany inactivity and poor diet.

Diet itself helps to increase calorie burning by boosting metabolism, a process further enhanced while gaining more lean muscle. An aerobic exercise programme can burn fat and increase the...

What is Sports Psychology ?

Athletes spend a lot of their time physically practicing to get an edge on the competition, but most athletes fatigue mentally before they fatigue physically, due to the fact that their mind is not in as good shape as their bodies.

Over the past several years, both coaches and athletes have started to realize that strength, speed and other athletic skills are not sufficient for the production of championship athletes. Athletic performance has three parts: physical preparation, technical skill, and psychological readiness. This model suggests that if any of the above areas are neglected, athletic performance will decline. However, psychological preparation is the component that is most often neglected by athletes and coaches alike.

Your body is a mass of muscles and nerves linked together into the central processing unit which is your brain. Sports psychology seeks to show you how to use that central processing unit to its greatest effect in controlling your body to give optimum sporting performance.

The main approaches to Sports Psychology are:

  • Goal Setting
  • Imagery and Simulation
  • ...
