What is Ecology ?

According to Mr. Ravi Bhargava, Director of a leading Environment laboratory, “The new millennium will witness a greater emphasis on quality of life of which health is a vital component. Therefore, environmental and ecology professionals will be required to deal with a wide spectrum of related issues.”  Ecology (“oikos” which means a “house”) links appropriately with “habitat”, the natural home or environment of an animal or plant. It is the study of relationships among organisms and the environment they live including all living and non living components. The term was coined by biologist Ernst Haeckel in 1896.It addresses issues such as the distribution and abundance of organisms, how living things interact with each other and their environment, the fluxes of matter and energy through the living world. Some ideas associated with an ecosystem are energy flow, and the cycling of nutrients and wastes among the various biotic and abiotic (non-living) components.
